In support to the Expanded National Greening Program of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), the NEDA Region VI officials and staff led by RD Ro-Ann A. Bacal conducted a tree planting activity at the Iloilo River Esplanade 4, Iloilo City on September 6, 2019.
A total of 200 Bungalon mangrove seedlings provided by DENR were planted by the NEDA-VI officials and staff along the banks of Iloilo River.
As endemic species in the area, the mangroves mitigate soil erosion, improve water quality, and sustain the thriving wildlife. The activity is in support to the Duterte Administration’s target to reforest some 1.2 million hectares of land between 2017 to 2022 in accordance with the updated 2016-2028 Master Plan for Forestry Development.
The newly completed Iloilo River Esplanade 4 was chosen by NEDA-VI as this year’s tree planting site to affirm its commitment to maintain Iloilo City’s ecological balance as the latter currently experiences a surge of investments and economic growth.
The Iloilo River Esplanade 4 is part of the Iloilo River Esplanade along the Iloilo River in Iloilo City. As a major tourism and lifestyle destination in Iloilo City, the 18.1-kilometer linear park garnered the 2018 Haligi ng Dangal Award for Best Landscape Architecture of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts.
In 2018, the Iloilo-Batiano River Development Project which covers the rehabilitation of the Iloilo River and development of the Iloilo River Esplanade won the Galing Pook Award (rgc/drd).
