The Mobility Awards recognize acts of leadership promoting cycling as a reliable, efficient, and sustainable mode of transport

Looking back: The Mobility Awards 2021 recognizing Iloilo City as one of the most bike-friendly cities in the Philippines is a dream coming true for Mayor Jerry Treñas because it is one of the initiatives that made the city more sustainable.

“My dream for Iloilo City is coming into reality. I would have not done it without the help of the private individuals and my fellow Ilonggos,” said Treñas.

The Mobility Awards recognize acts of leadership by Philippine local governments, workplaces, and commercial establishments to promote cycling as a reliable, efficient, and sustainable mode of transport among their constituencies, customers, employees, and communities. The cities of Mandaue and Naga also won the same award in 2021.

One day later, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) also gave Iloilo City a gold award during the Bike Lane Awards 2021. Iloilo City bested Pasig (silver award) and Quezon City (bronze award).

“Here in Iloilo, we have noticed that more people are using bicycles as means of transportation because of the bike lanes. We are hopeful that this will promote healthier lifestyles while at the same time will further our efforts to combat climate change. Aside from the existing bike lanes, we are now helping DPWH develop additional bike lanes along the circumferential road, and this will even add more protected bike lanes in Iloilo city,” Treñas explained.

“Madamo pa guid kita mga iniyatibo para masulong ang turismo nga makabulig dugang nga pangabuhian sa aton mga kasimanwa. Ang akon ginaobra, para guid sa kaayuhan sang akon mga pinalangga nga mga Ilonggo,” Treñas concluded./
